The Best Beaches on Saint Simons Island (by what you actually want)

East Beach for families, Gould's Inlet for tide pools, Massengale for sunsets, and more โ€” a beach-by-beach guide from a local.

Most guides to Saint Simons lump every stretch of sand together. They shouldn't. The beaches here vary more than you'd expect for an island this size, and picking the right one for your day makes a real difference.

East Beach โ€” the all-around winner

East Beach is the widest and most forgiving stretch on the island, and it's where we send guests who want the classic Southern beach day: beach chairs, umbrellas, coolers, kids with buckets. Park at Coast Guard Station or along Ocean Boulevard. The sand runs out forever at low tide, which is ideal for long walks and equally ideal for kids learning to boogie board in gentle water.

Best for: families, sunbathing, long walks.

Gould's Inlet โ€” tide pools and shorebirds

At the far north end of East Beach, the island narrows into Gould's Inlet. When the tide is out, you get a network of tide pools alive with hermit crabs, tiny flounder, and more shorebirds than you can name. It's also the best spot on the island to watch shrimp boats working the inlet.

Best for: kids hunting for critters, birdwatchers, photographers.

Massengale Park โ€” sunsets and shade

Massengale sits right at the edge of Pier Village, with a shaded park behind it and a short walk to the pier for dinner afterward. The sunsets here, when the tide is high, are the ones you'll put on Instagram.

Best for: a walk-and-dinner evening, couples.

Neptune Park โ€” the pier and the playground

The stretch of sand beside the pier is compact but central. Kids have the playground, grown-ups have the pier bars, and everyone has the ice cream shop. Not a full beach day, but a lovely couple of hours.

Best for: kids, a short beach fix while exploring the village.

A local tip: check the tide chart first

Saint Simons has a six-foot tidal swing. A beach that's 80 yards wide at low tide might be 10 yards wide at high. Before you load up the car, glance at a tide chart. We keep printed ones at Salty Dog, and there's an app called Tides Near Me that handles it on the phone.
