Getting Around Saint Simons Island (You Won't Need Your Car Much)

How to navigate Saint Simons Island on foot, by bike, and by golf cart โ€” and when a car actually helps.

Saint Simons is a small island, and most of the good stuff is within biking distance of anywhere you stay. Here's how locals get around.

By bike

Saint Simons has a legitimately great bike path system. The main trail runs from the village up through most of the residential neighborhoods. It's flat, shaded, and safe enough for kids.

Salty Dog includes bikes for guests (two adult cruisers, plus a kid's bike on request). If you need more, rent from Ocean Motion or Wheel Fun Rentals near the pier.

On foot

The village core โ€” pier, playground, restaurants, ice cream โ€” is best on foot. If you're staying on the south end (we are), you're about a 15-minute walk from the village and a 5-minute walk from the beach.

Golf carts

Street-legal golf carts are everywhere. They're fun, they feel very island, but they're not strictly necessary if you have bikes. Rent from Sam's Golf Carts on North Harrington.

Your car

You'll want the car for:

  • Grocery runs (Winn-Dixie or Publix)
  • Driving to Jekyll Island
  • Dinner off-island (Brunswick, Darien)
  • Rainy days when biking isn't fun

But you won't need it every day. Plan a day or two without moving the car at all.

What you don't need

Saint Simons doesn't have Uber or Lyft reliably, and there's no local transit system to speak of. Plan your arrival with that in mind โ€” if you're flying into Jacksonville or Savannah, rent a car.
